Anyone who has walked in Scotland during the summer months will know that midges mean business!
These horrid little flying insects can turn a pleasant walk in the countryside into something straight from a horror film if you are unprepared.
Last year we tested a number of different repellents from various suppliers to help you pick one that may do the job for you. The first we are reviewing is one we found worked well for the majority of people.
Jungle Formula Maximum Insect Repellent
Jungle Formula maximum insect repellent is available in a pump spray, aerosol, roll on and easy to apply lotion and is made up from 50% DEET and plant extracts for that provides lasting protection.
So what is DEET?
DEET (or diethyltoluamide) is the most common active ingredient in insect repellents and was originally developed for use as a pesticide for agricultural use. It provides protection against mosquitoes, ticks, fleas, chiggers, leeches, and many more biting insects.
There are a few things you should consider before using a DEET based substance…
- DEET is effective but it does not agree with everyone especially those suffering with respiratory problems such as asthma.
- It can also irritate people with sensitive skin and this the reason that it is normally diluted down to 50% in most repellents.
- Repellents containing DEET are not suitable for children under 16 years old.
- DEET is also known to have a corrosive effect on some modern fabrics (e.g. light shell jackets) and plastics so care has to be taken when applying it.
Apply carefully to all exposed clean and dry skin except for eyes and lips. For use on face, spray into palm of hand before applying. Re-apply as necessary depending on conditions such as temperature, humidity and other environmental factors can reduce the duration of protection of all insect repellents.
Is the formula any good?
Well yes, if used properly we found it to be really effective in repelling the dreaded Scottish midges. The manufacturer claims that one application provides 9 hours of protection but we found that be effective you need to reapply it every couple of hours.
I personally found that by applying it around the brim of my sun hat (ex-British Army bush hat) the repellent kept the majority of midges away from my face and neck which was brilliant as I could avoid having use a view spoiling midge net.
In general Jungle Formula Maximum Insect Repellent works well against the tiny flying devils of Scotland and is worth considering if you are going to be in midge infested areas.
