The Auchtermuchty Wander is a popular route for walkers, runners and cyclists alike.

There are two starting points for this route.

You can start it either in the car park at the entrance to the Forestry Commission Pitmedden site or from the town centre car park (or bus stop) in Auchtermuchty itself. I prefer the woodland start as do my two adventurous Golden Retrievers so I will start this route here.

The car park is small but big enough for 5 or 6 cars. Midge repellent will be needed in summer as they do get really annoying so perhaps not a good picnic spot.

Head off from the car park in to the woodland following the track taking care as mountain bike riders tend to zip along the tracks at high speed. The track winds it way through the woodland toward Auchtermuchty Common and onwards on to Glassants Road which a single track road but does have a good verge either side so you can allow traffic to pass easily.

At the road junction turn left taking care as this is busy road. Make sure you walk on the right hand side and keep your dogs close. Follow the road for a short distance and turn in on to the common (small car park here as well). Follow the track all the way down towards Auchertermuchty. There are plenty of places to refresh yourself and rest your feet in the town.

Leave the town on Leckiebank Road which is another single track road that snakes it way through farmland. Shortly before you reach the large farm buildings and after you have passed Baincraig Lodge there is a track turning right that bypasses the farm (wise choice when walking dogs as the farm is busy). Follow it around past the farm cottages (right) and walk along to the road junction and turning left on to the main road. A short walk along the road and you arrive back at the car park.
