Benarty Hill stands proudly in the Fife landscape.

This walking route starts in a small car park at the entrance to Forestry Commission Benarty.

Head up the steps through the forest following the path. This initial stage of the route is steep so is not suited for walkers with limited abilities. The steps give way to a clear forest track which you can follow until you reach the hill itself.

The hill’s 356m is deceiving and feels much higher when you stand beside the Ordnance Survey trig point on the summit and overs some superb views over the region itself and over Loch Leven and beyond.

You can then make your way up the hill towards the top (OS Grid NT 1538 9788). The views are amazing and after you have caught your breath you can walk along the ridge along to Mulla Craig (OS Grid NT 1424 9770) which offers you a different vista and is especially nice for photographers wanting to capture Loch Leven and the abundant bird life. Take care when passing the cliff edge (mid-way) and give it plenty of space.

To return to the start just simply retrace your steps like I do or you can head down the western side through the woodland and head back to you care following the road. Take care if you choose to do this as the road is very busy and fast.

I have climbed this hill many times over the past 4o years and it still ranks in my top ten favourite hill walks alongside the likes of Ben Nevis and Ben Avon.
