The countryside around the tiny hamlet of Kemback has lots of hidden trails and paths to be discovered.
I often find myself in this area while working and couldn’t resist the urge to explore some of the paths that I spotted in my lunch break.
This 5km route is grade 3/4 as it involves some off trail walking in the overgrown wooded part of the walk and is one who like a little bit of rough off-path walking and not worried by steep paths.
The route begins in a small parking spot next to the football pitch. Leave the car park and walk along the road towards the village church and when it turns right, follow it for a further 25m where you need to look for a trail on the left. There is a good geocache to be found near to the church location (GC1M9RF).
This walking route does involve some walking on some quiet minor roads so please be careful and watch out for fast moving farm machinery especially in the Thornbank stretch.
Walk Fife note: Please abide by the Highway Code for walkers - you can learn more by visiting http://www.ramblers.org.uk/advice/safety/highway-code-for-walkers.aspx
Follow the trail alongside the small wooded area and turn right when you meet the road surface again and follow until you reach a turning on the left next to some houses (Thornbank). Take the turning and follow it for roughly 500m until you see what appears to be a storage area for trailers and other farm equipment. At this point look on the left and you will see a trail leading into the woods (OS Grid Ref. NO 4289 1567). This trial was a little overgrown and muddy when I last walked it in August 2017 so be prepared.
Follow the woodland path as it works it way not the wood. The path can be faint in areas but if you can read the wood floor for clues where to head. Follow the path out to the edge of the wood and turn left and follow the path along the edge for 500m where you will see a overgrown firebreak. Follow this break up the hill (quite steep). I can be a bit of scrabble in wet weather so be careful. after 200m you will meet an established path where you need to turn right and follow it out of the wood and on to a farm road.
Follow the farm road south and when it meets the road turn right and head west . You will see a trail heading alongside a small wooded area which will lead you back to the road running into Kemback and your starting point. There is a geocache hidden half way along on the trail (GCRXC4).
This is my first route I have shared with Walk Fife and hopefully the first of many.
