The Fife village of Strathmiglo is a good starting point for many good countryside walking routes.

This 7.5 mile route is one for people that like to really stretch their legs and don’t mind midges and mud!

The route starts on the outskirts of Strathmiglo. There are plenty of places to park your car and the village can be reached by bus.

Large sections of this route involves rough tracks that can be very muddy and unstable and as such is a Grade 3 walk.

You leave the village southwards on a footpath which heads towards the Barrington Muir Plantation which sits at the base of the Lomond Hills. Shortly after entering the plantation the path veers left and exits the woods and takes you into the farmland The walking here is even and level  and on a sunny day can be very exposed so sun block and hats are a good idea as shade is sparse.

After a couple of miles you will reach a welcome rest stop in the form of the Pillars of Hercules cafe. The cafe is very reasonable in price and the food and service are excellent.

After refueling at the cafe the route then heads back into the woodland where midges dwell! The track is very rough and winds its way along the hillside. The track is popular with cyclists so take care on this section as they often seem to appear out of nowhere at high speed.

The track begins to head down the hillside after approximately 3 mile and it rejoins the track you entered the plantation on and leads you back to Strathmiglo.

This is a very enjoyable walk all year round and I have walked it many times with friends who live nearby and the stop at the Pillars of Hercules is always a favourite.
