A good torch is a must have for walkers.
The Olight S1 Baton combines the compactness of a small torch with the power of a larger model.
Design & Construction
The body is constructed of 6061-T6 aluminum alloy with anti-scratch hard anodising and unlike other torches where the power switch is located in the end cap, the S1 has a nice side mounted button. The power button has a low profile to help prevent accidental operation when in a pocket or backpack.
The S1 only measures 21mm x 61mm and weights in at only 45g making it very pocket friendly.
The design includes a well designed sprung pocket clip and lanyard hole for storage and use and also has a magnetic end cap for mounting the unit when using it which I have found really handy especially when using the torch for work although you have to make sure you keep it away from electronics and compasses as it may interfere with their operation.
The S1 Baton can be powered by either RCR123A or CR123A batteries which help keep the dimensions of the torch smaller than the norm. The unit uses a Cree XM-L2 CW LED to allow it to reach a maximum beam distance of 110 meters and giving it a maximum output of approximately 500 lumens.
The torch has three standard modes: 8 lumens, 80 lumens and 500 lumens and two special modes: 0.5 lumen moonlight mode (good for preserving night vision while reading maps or looking for kit in a pack) and a 10Hz strobe mode (ideal for emergency use). It also has a timer of 3 or 9 minutes which I can imagine can be useful in a camp set up.
I have been using the Olight S1 Baton for 2 years in many different weather conditions while walking through the Scottish hills and mountains and I have found it to be well designed and more than powerful enough for the majority of uses. It is compact, lightweight, powerful and effective.
