Walkers are taking more and more electronic gadgets in to the outdoors and keeping these devices powered you are going to need some power on the go.

Many powerpacks have been designed to be small and lightweight and as a result they can be a little wimpy for outdoors use and this is where the Varta Indestructible Powerpack 6000 is different.

The pack has been designed to be rugged and durable while providing essential power for all of your outdoor gadgets.

Tough & Waterproof Construction

The unit is enclosed in a tough black rubber and steel casing which is a little bulky and heavy (210g) compared to the likes of the slimmer EasyAcc Classic (140g) I reviewed in December 2015. While some may find this annoying it provides the advantage of making the unit very resilient (drop tested at 2m) and dust and waterproof (IP67 rating) which is something I think many external power supplies omit in their design.

Power

The unit’s battery is a very effective 6000mHa Lithium-Ion which supplies two USB outputs. USB One pumps out 5V – 1000mHa suitable for most smart phones and GPS units etc. USB Two pumps out little more at 5V – 2400mHa suitable for tablets and more power hungry devices such as head torches.

The USB ports are protected by a rubber cover preventing moisture and dirt from affecting the terminals. You can gauge the charge that the unit contains by depressing the power button which will illuminate up to four blue LED indicator lights on the face on the casing.

Charging

The unit is provided with a micro USB charging cable which allows you to fully charge the unit from a standard USB port. If you chose to charge the unit this way it will take around 6-8 hours but if you use a USB mains adaptor instead, you will reduce that charging time down to 5-6 hours. The unit claims to be able to provide up to 3 full phone charges but to my surprise it has fully charged my iPhone 6 up to 5 times without issue.

Verdict

After testing the Varta Indestructible Powerpack 6000 over the winter on the Scottish mountains and while walking, I have found it to be possibly the most reliable and toughest power unit I have owned so far. It has taken a fair few knocks and has been subjected to really adverse weather conditions and survived. Yes it is a little more bulky and heavier than other offerings out there but it certainly does the job.
