Walk Fife will be running a free Basic Map Reading for Beginners Workshop on the 13th October 2018.

Map reading is one of the most valuable skills a walker can learn.

Walk Fife volunteers Gary and Andrew will be running this free workshop in Dunfermline. Gary is well versed in many different forms of navigation thanks to his past career serving as a mountain leader in the British Armed Forces. Andrew served in the RAF for many years and is very experienced in many forms of navigation.

This workshop is classroom based and will introduce attendees to the basics of map reading and is ideal for those who are new to using maps when walking in the countryside. Gary and Andrew will also be available after the workshop to answer any map reading questions that you may have.

The workshop will cover the following topics:

  • What is a map?
  • Map symbols and their meaning
  • Map scales – picking the right scale for your needs
  • How to read and give a 6 figure grid reference
  • Map care – how to correctly fold and store a map
